The Humble King
Sermon Notes
I. Introduction
a. We are studying communicable attributes of Jesus which means they are available to believers as well.
b. Today, we look at Jesus the Humble King
II. Jesus the_________________ King
a. Philippians 2:5-8 - “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, as He already existed in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself by taking the form of a bond-servant and being born in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death: death on a cross.”
b. Matthew 20:28 “...just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
c. 2 Reasons Jesus Had to Be a Humble King
i. If Jesus presented Himself as the Righteous King, the Wise King, the Powerful King, the Redeeming King, but was also a prideful King, we would have a dictator, a despot, a tyrant.
ii. Jesus had to set the example and model for you and me that we are do likewise.
1. Philippians 2:3-4 - “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility, consider one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.”
2. Matthew 20:25-28 - But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them, and those in high position exercise authority over them. It is not this way among you, but whoever wants to become prominent among you shall be your servant, and whoever desires to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
III. The Primary Reason We Don’t Act with Humility is _______________
a. Satan’s sin was pride.
i. Is 13:12-15 “How you have fallen from heaven, you star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, you who defeated the nations! But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, and I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ Nevertheless, you will be brought down to Sheol, to the recesses of the pit.”
IV. Thoughts on Humility
a. Humility Needs to ____________ ________________
b. Humility Needs to ______________ By The __________________
c. Humility is a Lifestyle of God ____________
i. Romans 15:17-18a – “Therefore, in Christ Jesus I have found reason for boasting in things pertaining to God. For I will not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me...”
ii. Philippians 4:11-13 - “Not that I speak from need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
iii. I Corinthians 3:5-7 – “What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave opportunity to each one. I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.”
d. Humility is a Lifestyle of Others _______________
i. Colossians 3:12-13 - “So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so must you do also.”
e. Humility is a Lifestyle of Me _____________
i. Romans 5:6-9 - “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous person; though perhaps for the good person someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His love toward us, in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.”
