SAUL’S RASH VOW
When My Personal Agenda Hurts Others

KEY PASSAGE

1 Samuel 14:24 ESV… And the men of Israel had been hard pressed that day, so Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies.” So none of the people had tasted food.

HANNAH WANTS A SON

  • You can’t talk about the kings of Israel without talking about Samuel.

  • Samuel’s mother Hannah vowed to dedicate her son to the Lord… 1 Sam. 1:10-11

  • The Bible has much to say about making vows… Prov. 20:25

  • Jephthah made a rash vow… Judges 11:30-35

SAUL’S AGENDA: VENGEANCE

  • Jonathan’s courage sends the Philistines into confusion… 1 Samuel 14:1-20

  • Saul's agenda to be avenged, causes him to make a rash vow… 1 Sam. 14:24

  • Jonathan recognizes that his father’s decision was a bad one… 1 Sam. 14:29-30

  • Self-control of one’s emotions is critically important… Prov. 16:23

SAUL’S AGENDA: KILL DAVID

  • Saul had an intense jealousy of David… 1 Samuel 18:6-16;

  • Saul didn’t serve his people, but rather pursued David… 1 Samuel 22:7-8

JESUS’ AGENDA: GIVE HIS LIFE AWAY

  • Jesus was a king who came to serve and lay his life down… Mark 10:45

  • Jesus was / is the good shepherd of Israel… John 10:11

  • As believers, we are to take on the same disposition as Christ… Phil. 2:3-8

  • The world needs to see believers as those with an “agenda for others”!

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

  • Have you ever been hurt by someone with a personal agenda?

  • How did Saul bring harm on his people?

  • Have you ever hurt someone with your personal agenda?

  • Take time to praise God for His Son’s sacrificial nature!
