God Hates Grumbling


KEY PASSAGE: Philippians 2:14-15

THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A THANKFUL SPIRIT

1. In 1789, George Washington became the first president to proclaim a Thanksgiving holiday

2. If being thankful matters to this country, how much more should it matter to us who believe!

WHEN GOD’S PEOPLE GRUMBLE

1. Sadly, the Israelites often grumbled and complained… Exodus 16:1-3

2. We often don’t view grumbling as “that bad of a sin”

3. God is very displeased with grumbling… Numbers 11:1-3; 14:26-30

4. As believers, we should think twice before grumbling… 1 Corinthians 10:9-10

DO ALL THINGS WITHOUT GRUMBLING

1. As God’s children, we are called to do all things without complaining… Philippians 2:14-15

2. Avoiding grumbling is part of having the same attitude as Christ… Philippians 2:3-8

3. Guarding your heart against grumbling doesn’t mean ignoring pain and frustration… Isaiah 53:3;

John 13:21

4. Charles Spurgeon once said: “We are to complain of nothing but sin; Oh, Christian, never

breathe in the ear of God one ungrateful word!”

5. John Owen once said…"There is no duty we perform for God that is not observed by God. So,

therefore, murmur not; God hears your murmurings."

6. God hears even the quietest of our murmurings!

WE SHINE WHEN WE REPLACE GRUMBLING WITH GRATITUDE

1. People will notice the person who has a godly attitude… Philippians 2:15; Matthew 5:14-16

2. Paul called the Philippians to replace grumbling with gratitude… Philippians 3:1; 4:4

1. When and where are you most tempted to grumble against God?

2. Why is God so displeased when his people grumble and complain?

3. Do you think the church in general is thankful enough?

4. Seek to identify one area where you can replace grumbling with gratitude!
