TODAY’S PASSAGE:

1 Timothy 6:6-8 ESV… But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.

IF YOU COULD WISH FOR ONE THING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

  • What a person “wishes for“ reveals what is on their heart… Matthew 12:34

  • The “law of attraction and manifestation“ is the bogus idea that the energy you give off, is the energy you will attract.

  • Satan tempted Jesus with the riches and pleasures of this world… Matthew 4:8

  • Jesus taught and modeled what it looked like to put “God’s will“ first… Matthew 6:9-10; John 6:38; Luke 22:40-42

  • It doesn’t matter what you “proclaim“ over your life or “for your life“ or “about your life“… you will not get it unless the Lord has ordained it… Lamentations 3:37

  • Our prayers will only be answered when they are in-line with God’s will… Mark 11:24; 1 John 5:14

THE “WORD OF FAITH“ MOVEMENT

  • The “word of faith“ movement is also known as the “prosperity gospel“.

  • Kenneth Hagin… “God created the world with words. Words filled with faith are the most powerful things in all the world.“

  • Kenneth Copeland… “What comes out of our hearts through the words of our mouths determines what comes to pass in our lives. It’s the absolute truth.“

  • John Piper… “It is not the Gospel, and it’s being exported from this country to Africa and Asia, selling a bill of goods to the poorest of the poor: Believe this message, and your pigs won’t die and your wife won’t have miscarriages, and you’ll have rings on your fingers and coats on your back. That’s coming out of America-selling people a bunch of garbage called the Gospel.“

  • Our words can produce great harm or bring great blessing depending on how we use them… Proverbs 18:21; James 3:5-10

  • “God’s will“ for the believer can be summed up in one word: CONTENTMENT

GODLINESS & CONTENTMENT

  • Godliness with contentment is great gain… 1 Timothy 6:6-8

  • Puritan theologian Thomas Watson… “Discontent is a leprosy that breeds in the soul; a man may have enough, yet if he is discontented, nothing is enough for him.“

  • Puritan Jeremiah Burroughs… “A Christian is the most contented person in the world; He is contented with God’s providence and contented with his condition.“

  • Paul reveals the key to being content… Philippians 4:11-13; 2:14; 2 Corinthians 11:24-28; Isaiah 40:29-31
